Please Consider Supporting 22q13
This year NAFA Philadelphia is again supporting one of our own. Jack O’Donnell, a long-standing member of the Philadelphia Chapter has a beautiful & inspirational young granddaughter, Sierra, who was diagnosed shortly after birth with 22Q13 Deletion Syndrome.
Because of the rarity of the syndrome, Jack and his entire family understood very little about what to expect with a young child diagnosed with this condition. Fortunately for Jack’s family, they were able to obtain access to other families and medical professionals that had knowledge of, and experience with, this very rare condition through the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation. This support network and information reference has been invaluable to Jack’s family since Sierra’s birth 4-years ago. For this reason, we are teaming up to support the 22Q1-3 (Phelan-McDermid) Syndrome Foundation.
Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is a very rare condition associated with an abnormality of chromosome 22. Fewer than 600 people worldwide have been diagnosed with the condition and It has been recently recognized as a genetic cause of autism. This gene plays a pivotal role in development of the human nervous system, including the brain, and loss of this genetic component prevents proper nervous system construction during fetal development. The Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit group that provides support services for those who have family members affected by Phelan-McDermid Syndrome.
It is the mission of the foundation to build an alliance of family support for diagnosed individuals and to provide families and professionals an opportunity for scientific education and informational exchange The Foundation offers grants to researchers, pays for member attendance at medical and scientific conferences and raises awareness in the research community. We are asking anyone who is interested in contributing to please bring your contribution to the holiday luncheon. Both checks and cash will be accepted. Please make checks payable to “ Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation”
